Alex is also a regular on the BikeRadar YouTube channel and BikeRadar podcast.Better performance. Alex is also a dedicated eMTB rider, and still dabbles in racing of a sort, doing his best to top the Strava leaderboard on the steepest, gnarliest and twistiest trails the Tweed Valley has to offer – just for fun, of course. He’s one of BikeRadar’s lead testers and knows how to push bikes and products to the limit, searching out the equipment that represents the best value for money. Since working for MBUK, Alex’s focus has moved to bike tech. Alex then moved back to the UK and put his vast knowledge of mountain biking to good use by landing a job working for MBUK magazine as features editor. Hitting those famous tracks day in, day out for eight years, he broke more bikes than he can remember. Alex moved to Morzine in the French Alps at 19 to pursue a career as a bike bum and clocked up an enormous amount of riding. He started racing downhill at the tender age of 11 before going on to compete across Europe. Happily, the chain didn’t drop at all during the entire test period.Īlex Evans is BikeRadar’s senior mountain bike technical editor. However, keeping the chain on the 24t ring and only using the rear shifter creates too much chain slap and noise, so it’s preferable to shift between the chainrings instead where possible. This interrupts flow on undulating climbs, and left me spinning out at times. Because of the large jump between the two chainrings, changing from the big ring to the smaller one and vice versa requires multiple shifts on the cassette to maintain a comfortable pedalling cadence. ![]() In a world of 1x drivetrains, the double crankset feels clunky. ![]() Specialized Rockhopper Comp 29 2x ride impressions Stout-branded rims are built onto Shimano hubs and shod with Specialized’s own 2.3in-wide Ground Control tyres front and rear. My large test bike had 100mm of travel and a custom spring rate. Specialized has specced a Suntour XCM fork with a coil rather than air spring, and given it its RxTune treatment, meaning it has either 90 or 100mm of travel and harder or softer spring rates depending on the frame size. It has a traditional XC bike feel on the descents. ![]()
